tattoo modification process

Tattoo Modification Process at Inkonic Tattoo Studio

Every cover-up journey begins with a 1-1 consultation between you and the artist. You will share about your current tattoo, the reason for wanting to repair it, and your idea. The artist will assess the condition of the old tattoo (ink color, darkness, size, location, skin condition…) and listen to the story behind it. From there, we propose replaceable options. Inkonic always encourages clients to make an appointment in advance for a detailed consultation and enough time to discuss ideas.

Based on the agreed direction, the artist begins to sketch out the cover-up design. The sketch can be drawn on paper or on the computer, allowing you to visualize how the new tattoo will “overlap” the old one.

We will work with you to edit the design until you are completely satisfied about the lines, layout, and every small detail. This stage ensures that the new tattoo both covers the old one and is as beautiful as you want.

The skin area around the old tattoo will be thoroughly cleaned and sterilized. Inkonic always uses completely new tattoo needles for each client, high-quality tattoo ink, and modern, sterilized equipment.

The artist will mark or print a decal of the new design on the old tattoo for final alignment before tattooing. Everything is ready, you will be guided to the most comfortable sitting/lying position to start the tattoo repair process.

The artist begins the cover-up process carefully and with full concentration.

Old lines can be re-traced or cleverly incorporated into the new design. We will blend colors, add shadows, or completely rebuild the image depending on the design plan. The entire process is carried out with great patience and precision, ensuring that the new ink is even, covering the areas that need to be covered and creating artistic depth for the new tattoo. You can take a break in between if needed.

After completion, the tattoo will be cleaned one last time and bandaged (if needed). You will receive detailed instructions on how to care for the tattoo in the following days, from washing with saline, applying moisturizer, to avoiding water and sun.

We recommend that you return to the studio after 2-4 weeks for the artist to check the results after healing. If necessary, we will touch up some details, ensuring the final work is perfect.

Have a question?

Quick answers to questions you may have

Most tattoos can be repaired or covered up, depending on many factors such as the size, ink color, and darkness of the old tattoo.

Small, light-colored, or faded tattoos are often easier to cover up.

Conversely, tattoos that are too large or too dark may require a more complex cover-up design (sometimes even partial laser removal before covering up).

At Inkonic, the artist will carefully assess the old tattoo and advise the best option during the first consultation.

The pain of a tattoo repair can be slightly higher than a new tattoo, because the area of the tattoo has scar tissue and is more sensitive than normal.

To minimize pain, Inkonic can divide the tattoo session into several short sessions, while also instructing you on how to breathe and relax. We also provide numbing cream (upon request) for large cover-ups or tattoos in sensitive areas, making your experience as pleasant as possible.

The time it takes for a cover-up session depends on the size and complexity of the new tattoo.

For small or simple tattoos, you can complete them in 1–3 hours.

Medium-sized designs can take 3–5 hours.

If your cover-up tattoo is large or has intricate details, the artist may suggest splitting it into multiple sessions to ensure you are fit and the work is of the highest quality.

During your consultation, Inkonic will give you an estimate of how long it will take to complete so you can plan accordingly.

Yes. Inkonic’s aftercare policy includes touch-up support if necessary.

After your cover-up tattoo has healed (usually about 4-6 weeks), you can contact the studio to schedule a touch-up appointment.

The artist will check and touch up any areas where the color is not yet standard or details need to be sharper (if any).

Absolutely. Inkonic is always welcoming and has served many foreign customers, from tourists to settlers.
Regarding communication language, the staff and artists at Inkonic can communicate fluently in English, from consultation, exchanging ideas, to care instructions that are clearly explained.
